Cloud was very jealous of the other boys who Tifa spent most of her time with. One day, after Tifa had been devasted by the loss of her mother, she decided to cross the dangerous old wooden bridge that led to the Mt. Nibel Reactor. Cloud was the only one of her friends brave enough to go with her, but they both fell through the bridge and Cloud was blamed for hurting Tifa.

After the death of her mother, Tifa spent a lot of time by herself brooding, and ignored Cloud even more. Cloud decided that the only way to get Tifa's attention would be to go to Midgar and join SOLDIER. SOLDIER serves the powerful organization known as Shinra Inc. Each member is injected with cells from a creature known as Jenova and exposed to high amounts of Mako Energy. Cloud dreamed of becoming a great warrior, like Sephiroth. However, he never made it into SOLDIER because of his sour attitude and could only become a Shinra guard.

When Cloud returned to Nibelheim on a mission with Sephiroth and another member of SOLDIER, Cloud's only friend in the organization, Zack to investigate a Mako Reactor that had been producing monsters, Cloud was too ashamed to show his face. He was 16 at the time. Tifa was their guide to the Mt. Nibel reactor, but he didn't even reveal himself to her. A little while into the mission, Sephiroth discovered a terrible secret from his past (see Sephiroth's profile) and went bereserk, killing many townspeople and burning down most of Nibelheim. He killed Tifa's father going into the reactor and Tifa tried to take him on. She was injured and Cloud finally revealed himself to rescue her. Zack rushed in and challenged Sephiroth, but was defeated. He gave his sword to Cloud and Cloud took Sephiroth from behind. A battle ensued and Sephiroth ran Cloud through with his giant sword, but Cloud managed to throw Sephiroth off a reactor bridge.

Cloud and Zack were captured by the Shinra and used in Professor Hojo's twisted experimentations. Both were injected with Jenova cells and exposed to high amounts of Mako energy. This is how Cloud came to have the Mako glow in his eyes, the mark of a SOLDIER member. Cloud and Zack they managed to escape and traveled to Midgar. They had decided to become mercenaries, but Zack was killed by Shinra troops upon their arrival. Cloud took Zack's sword and continued into Midgar. Eventually, he convinced himself that he once was a member of SOLDIER and forgot completely about Zack. 5 years after his encounter with Sephiroth, Cloud is hired by the rebel group AVALANCHE and gets sucked into a massive struggle for the life of the Planet.
