| Red XIII's real name is Nanaki. He is the last member of a species of highly intelligent beasts that used to be plentiful among the hills around Cosmo Canyon. Over time, his species developed a friendship with the people of the Canyon and some even made their homes there. However, these creatures were killed off, almost to extinction, because of the Canyon people's war with many of the surrounding tribes. The most notable of these tribes is the Gi. For most of his life, Red XIII has believed that his father, Seraph, was a coward and a traitor to his people. During a battle with the Gi, Seraph ran away during the night and abandoned Red XIII and his mother. However, his grandfather, Bugenhagen, takes Red to a cave in Cosmo Canyon where the spirits of the Gi are trapped to show him who Seraph really was. There Red finds his father, completely turned to stone by the Gi arrows, standing on a cliff overlooking the Canyon. It was Seraph who single-handedly beat off the Gi and saved his people, although he sacrificed his life to do so. Bugenhagen tells Red XIII that Seraph ran away during the night because he did not want his mother or son to try and stop him. Cloud and the others meet Red XIII in Shinra Headquarters, trapped in a cage. Proffesor Hojo was trying to crossbreed him and Aeris so research on both Red's species and the Ancients could continue after his death. | ||||||||
