Chocobo breeding is very expensive, but it pays off in the end. With a Gold Chocobo in your possession, you can travel anywhere on the entire World Map. You can also collect some pretty sweet materia from hidden caves that only a Gold Chocobo can reach. This includes Knights of the Round summon materia, which hits all the enemies in a group for 70,000 damage each. To breed a Gold Chocobo, you'll need to already have the Highwind (an airplane that you can ride around in later on in the game). If you have it, you can begin breeding. First, fly to Choco Bill's Farm. Talk to Choco Bill (he's inside the house on the left) and rent out 3-6 Chocobo stables. Next, equip someone in your party with the Chocobo Lure materia and you're out to catch some Chocobos! Fly to Mideel and run around on the Chocobo tracks there. Every time you catch four Chocobos, head back to see what you have. To get Choco Billy's recommendations, talk to him about moving Chocobos. Keep trying until Billy says that you have caught a great running female. Put this Chocobo in your stables. Then head to the tracks near the Gold Saucer. You'll need to catch a good walking male, but these are hard to come by. They only appear with two Spencers (those annoying little "upper cutter" things). Once you have one of these in your stables, fly north to the Chocobo Sage's house, which is in a valley on the Northern Continent, near the North Cave. Talk to him and buy 60 Sylkis Greens. They're expensive, but you need them. Outside his house, run around in the grassy area until you enter combat with a big, red beast (a Vlakorados). You can steal a Carob Nut from him. You'll need 3 of these nuts. Go back to the farm and feed 10 Sylkis Greens to each of your Chocobos. At the Gold Saucer, talk to Ester at the Chocobo Racing area and she'll let you race. After it has won about 3 races, the Chocobo you are using to race will move into the next class. There are 4 classese: C (the class you begin as), B, A, and S. Race both your Chocobos until they are each A Class. Return to the farm and save. Mate your Chocobos using a Carob Nut until you have a Green and Blue Chocobo of opposite genders. You'll need to give the parents a while inbetween successful matings. Feed your new Chocobos 10 Sylkis Greens each and race them up to A Class. Once you've done this, save outside the Chocobo Farm and mate your Green and Blue Chocobo using a Carob Nut. Keep reseting until you have a male Black Chocobo. This Chocobo will also need to be fed 10 Sylkis Greens and raced up to A Class. Now go back to the Northern Continent and find the Chocobo tracks in the snow. Run around in these until you capture a wonderful female Chocobo. These are found with either one or two rabbits, called Jumpings. Feed this Chocobo the usual amount of greens and race it until it reaches A Class. Fly around the northeast corner of the map until you find a small island with a forest on it. Run around in this forest until you get in a fight with some Goblins, small, man-like creatures. Steal a Zeio Nut from them during battle. Go back to the farm and mate your Black and wonderful Chocobos using this nut. You should now have yourself a Gold Chocobo. Seems like a lot of work, doesn't it? Well here's the payoff: remember those hidden caves? From them, you can get Quadra Magic, Mime, HP-MP Swap, and Knights of the Round summon materia. The first cave is on an island completely surrounded by mountain. It contains Knights of the Round and is located by the Goblin Island in the northeast. Cave two, the one with Quadra Magic, is found near Mideel. The last two caves are north of Costa Del Sol and southeast of Wutai, respectively. Happy breeding! |
