Cid Highwind is a born pilot. He is very at home in the cockpit of any plane or ship. It is his dream to fly into outer space. His airplane, the Tiny Bronco, is the fastest plane on the Planet, next to the Highwind. Cid used to be a pilot for Shinra Inc. He piloted the Highwind and was renowned across the world. Many years ago, Shinra began a program to send a rocket into space. Cid was slated to pilot the rocket, which was to be launched from a small town called Rocket Town. The day of the launch came, and Cid was overjoyed that he was going to get a chance to fulfill his dream. Then, as the countdown was nearing its end and some final routine check-ups were being performed, Cid's engineer, Shera, discovered a faulty oxygen tank. Although it had to be fixed, it was impossible to do so without the person who was fixing it getting killed in the rocket launch. Shera told Cid to go ahead with the launch, she would fix the tank, even if it meant death for her. Just as the timer ran out and the rocket took off, Cid aborted the launch and saved Shera's life. Soon afterwards, Shinra scrapped the space program. Now Cid lives in Rocket Town, spending his days moping aroud the old rocket, praying that Shinra will reinstate the program and let him fly to the ends of the universe.
