| Barret was born in the coal mining town of Corel (now known as North Corel). The inhabitants had mined coal for many centuries and it was their way of life. Enter the Shinra. Shinra Inc. offered to built a Mako Reactor near Corel where the citizens could work and get power from. Mako was more efficient than coal and all of the townspeople were for it, with the exception of Barret's friend Dyne. Dyne didn't want to break the tradition of their forefathers, but the reactor was built anyways.
One day, after Barret and Dyne had been out of town at the reactor, they came back to find Corel in flames. The Shinra had attacked the town and murdered all of the people there. The company said it was because of a mess-up at the reactor. Troops spotted Barret and Dyne and opened fire on them. They retreated, but Dyne was hit. Barret grabbed his arm just in time to stop him from falling off a cliff, but the soldiers shot Barret's hand and Dyne fell, presumeably to his death. Barret went back to the destroyed village alone. He found his wife and Dyne's wife both dead. However Dyne's daughter, Marlene, was still alive and Barret decided to adopt her. He had an operation to replace his damaged hand with a gun. He and Marlene moved to Midgar, where Barret founded AVALANCHE so he could fight Shinra Inc. and get his revenge. |
